Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup to Implement New Formats in 2024

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced changes to the formats of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup for next year. The Billie Jean King Cup Finals will now feature eight teams instead of 12, aligning with the current Davis Cup Finals format. This adjustment is part of a strategy to unify the World Cup of Tennis events.

New Formats for Davis and Billie Jean Cups

Starting in 2025, the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers will consist of seven groups with three teams each. The winners from these groups will join a host nation in the Finals. Meanwhile, the Davis Cup's September stage will shift from a six-day group competition to seven home-or-away series over two days. The victorious teams will advance to the November Finals alongside a host nation.

Format Changes and Strategic Goals

The Billie Jean King Cup will also adopt home-or-away matches in its qualifiers starting in 2026. ITF President David Haggerty noted, "In Billie Jean King Cup, the move to an eight-team Finals aligns with the Davis Cup Final 8 format which has proven to be such a success." This change aims to streamline players' schedules after the U.S. Open while maintaining competitive intensity.

Ilana Kloss, chair of Billie Jean King Cup Ltd., highlighted that creating an optimal competition format is crucial for their long-term strategy. She stated, "An eight-team event over six days will be hugely beneficial to player health and the global fan experience. It's a win-win for everyone." This decision follows consultations with players, fans, partners, and broadcasters.

Upcoming Events and Host Bidding

The bidding process for hosting next year's Finals is currently underway. This year's tournaments are scheduled to take place in Malaga, Spain. These changes reflect ongoing efforts to enhance both player welfare and audience engagement on a global scale.

The ITF's adjustments aim to bring the World Cup of Tennis events closer together while ensuring they remain exciting and accessible for players and fans alike. By aligning formats and reducing scheduling pressures, these competitions are set to offer improved experiences for all involved.
