World Cup Exit Looms! K Srikkanth Tears Into Gautam Gambhir’s Strategy

India are staring at the very real threat of elimination from the T20 World Cup 2026 after a crushing Super 8 defeat to South Africa.

The setback has pushed the hosts to the edge: India must now win both their remaining matches against West Indies and Zimbabwe just to stay in contention for a semi-final berth. Even two victories may not be enough, with qualification likely to depend on other results-an unfamiliar and uncomfortable position for the tournament favourites.

With pressure mounting, former World Cup-winning opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth delivered a sharp critique of head coach Gautam Gambhir, questioning his influence over tactics and team selection at a time when India can least afford missteps.

"I am not sure what Gautam Gambhir does. Shouldn't he be the one strategising and deciding the XI?" Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda. "If he continues with strategies like these, he will be doomed."

Srikkanth was particularly critical of the decision to drop vice-captain Axar Patel, calling it emblematic of confused thinking within the team management.

"Will anyone drop Axar Patel? He's the vice-captain. It looks like whoever becomes vice-captain gets dropped. It happened earlier with Shubman Gill. Soon, no one will want to be vice-captain in T20Is," he remarked.

Terming the South Africa loss as one of India's lowest moments in the format, Srikkanth said the defeat has turned every remaining fixture into a virtual knockout.

"This is one of the most embarrassing defeats in Indian T20 history, apart from the 2022 semi-final. Because of this, the match against Zimbabwe has become crucial, and even the Zimbabwe-West Indies game matters to India now. When you reach this stage, you know you're in trouble," he said.

India face a must-win Super 8 clash on Wednesday, followed by their final group match against West Indies on Sunday, with captain Suryakumar Yadav and Gambhir under intense scrutiny as Team India fight to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
