Who is Hasan Mahmud? Bangladesh's Debutant Vs India In Chennai Test
Bangladesh's fast bowler Hasan Mahmud showcased exceptional skills on the first day of the Test match against India in Chennai. He dismissed key Indian batsmen Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. The pitch offered some help to bowlers early on, and Mahmud capitalised on it. In the fifth over, Rohit was caught at second slip by Najmul Hossain Shanto. Two overs later, Gill was caught behind chasing a leg-side delivery.
Mahmud's impressive form continued as he claimed Kohli's wicket, with Litton Das catching the star batter for just six runs. Since his international debut in March 2020, Mahmud has been a standout performer. Initially playing white-ball cricket for Bangladesh, he made his Test debut against Sri Lanka earlier in 2024. He quickly found success with a five-wicket haul against Pakistan, contributing significantly to Bangladesh's 2-0 series win.

India's Struggle Against Mahmud
Before the Chennai Test, Mahmud had taken 14 wickets in three Tests at an average of 25. His ODI and T20I records are also impressive, with 30 and 18 wickets respectively. On the match day, India reached lunch at 88-3. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant were batting on 37 and 33 respectively at the break. India's openers began cautiously; Rohit Sharma took 11 balls to score his first run after surviving some close calls.
Rohit managed to hit Hasan for the first boundary but was caught at second slip soon after for six runs. Shubman Gill lasted only eight deliveries before being caught behind for a duck while attempting a flick down the leg side. Kohli got off the mark with a single amid cheers from the crowd but was soon dismissed by Hasan when he edged a length delivery outside off-stump to wicketkeeper Litton Das.
Pant and Jaiswal Steady India's Innings
Kohli's return to Test cricket was disappointing as he scored just six runs after missing India's 4-1 home victory over England in March. With three wickets falling within an hour, India found themselves struggling at 34-3. However, Rishabh Pant, playing his first Test since a serious car accident in 2022, remained resilient alongside fellow left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal, adding 54 runs together.
The partnership between Pant and Jaiswal provided some stability to India's innings after an early collapse due to Mahmud's brilliant bowling performance. Their efforts helped India recover slightly from their precarious position during the first session of play.
Hasan Mahmud's outstanding performance against top Indian batsmen highlights his potential as a formidable fast bowler for Bangladesh in international cricket. His ability to exploit favourable conditions and dismiss key players showcases his growing prowess on the field.
