Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, once hailed as one of the brightest stars of Indian cricket, has recently made headlines after spotting alongside childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar at a public event. The two cricketers attended the unveiling of a statue of their childhood coach, Ramakant Achrekar. Recently, a video surfaced on social media showing Kambli struggling to walk properly, sparking concerns about his health. At 52, Kambli appears significantly older than his age, a stark contrast to his peak cricketing years. His current condition has been attributed to personal setbacks, including poor lifestyle choices.

Kambli's financial situation has also deteriorated. Once a cricketer with significant earnings and properties worth over $1 million (Rs 8.48 crore today), he is now reportedly dependent on a pension of Rs 30,000 per month from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In a 2022 report, Kambli's annual savings were estimated at only Rs 3 lakh.

With his health issues and no stable income, there is a growing call from his fans over his financial support.

India's World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has urged the cricketing community to support Kambli during these tough times. However, he said the importance of self-help in overcoming challenges.

"We should all try to support him, but more than us, he has to support himself. We can't look after anybody if that person can't look after himself," Kapil remarked at the launch of the Vishwa Samudra Open golf tournament.

"All the cricketers feel very sad about what we have seen. I wish his closest friends could try to get him some help, to look after himself, to go back to rehab. People do get this illness, but you have to get back to rehab," Kapil stated.

Kambli's Cricketing Legacy

Kambli's cricketing career was brief but remarkable. In 17 Test matches, he scored 1,084 runs at an impressive average of 54.2, including four centuries. In 97 ODIs, he accumulated 2,477 runs with two hundreds. His first-class career was equally noteworthy, with 9,965 runs at an astonishing average of 59.67 in 129 matches. However, his international career came to an abrupt end in 2000 after the Coca-Cola Champions Trophy final, where he managed only 5 runs.

A Lesson in Resilience

Kambli's journey serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes face when their careers are cut short or veer off track. While his talent remains undisputed, his current struggles underline the importance of planning for life beyond the playing field.

The cricketing world continues to hope that Kambli finds the strength and support needed to overcome his personal and financial difficulties.
