Afghanistan demonstrated that their victory against England in Delhi was no accident, as they delivered another commanding performance against a stronger adversary. Not only did Afghanistan outperform Pakistan in all three facets of the game, but they also displayed a superior level of intent and attitude. Despite Pakistan's formidable showing in the first innings, Afghanistan never appeared daunted during their pursuit of 283 runs, the highest they have ever chased in ODI cricket.

Following an outstanding performance by Noor Ahmad (3/49) on his World Cup debut, Rahmatullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, and Rahmat Shah all contributed sensational half-centuries, propelling Afghanistan to victory in 49 overs with eight wickets in hand.

This victory, Afghanistan's second of the campaign, propelled them to the sixth position in the points table. The team, coached by Jonathan Trott, now ranks just below Pakistan, both with two wins from five matches. Afghanistan's ascent in the rankings coincided with England's fall to the bottom of the table, having secured just one win from four games. India comfortably occupies the top position with five wins from as many matches, followed by New Zealand (2nd), South Africa (3rd), and Australia (4th) in the top four.
