What Caused The Nationwide Disruption of Train Service In Germany?

Train services in Germany resumed after a major technical outage brought the entire network to a standstill for more than two hours late on Tuesday night.

Deutsche Bahn confirmed shortly after midnight on Wednesday that the fault had been stabilised and trains were gradually returning to service, though delays and cancellations were expected to continue into the morning.

Regional and suburban operators also reported that services were restarting, but warned passengers to anticipate significant disruption. Evelyn Palla, the company's chief executive, told Bild newspaper that an emergency system had been used to restore operations, adding that the cause of the breakdown still needed to be identified.

What went wrong with Deutsche Bahn's GSM‑R system?

The outage was traced to a fault in the Global System for Mobile Communication for Railways (GSM-R), a network used for international railway communication. During the disruption, trains were held at stations across the country, leaving passengers stranded. The company apologised and issued taxi and hotel vouchers to those affected.

In the immediate aftermath, Palla explained that staff were working to bring trains into stations so passengers could disembark, while technicians attempted to resolve the issue. Reports from across Germany highlighted widespread suspensions, including in North Rhine-Westphalia, the country's most populous state. Berlin's transport authorities confirmed that municipal, regional and long-distance services were all impacted.

Deutsche Bahn has long faced criticism for its reliability, with frequent delays and cancellations becoming a familiar frustration for regular travellers. This latest incident is likely to reinforce perceptions of the company's ongoing struggles with punctuality and service consistency.
