Virat Kohli To Lead RCB In IPL 2025? Know Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Strategy
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) surprised many by choosing only one player from the first two marquee sets during the IPL 2025 mega auction. Despite having a substantial budget of Rs 83 crore, they opted for England's Liam Livingstone. Fans and experts were puzzled as RCB passed on big names like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and Mitchell Starc.
RCB's Auction Strategy Questioned
Former cricketer Robin Uthappa expressed his disappointment with RCB's strategy. "Three are my favourite sides are KKR, CSK and RCB. I have played for all three sides. I am telling you as a local Bengaluru boy, I am confused. I genuinely do not understand how you have the second-biggest purse and how you do not go for the big players in the marquee sets," Uthappa said.

RCB had retained Virat Kohli for Rs 21 crore, Rajat Patidar for Rs 11 crore, and Yash Dayal for Rs 6 crore before the auction. Speculation is growing that Kohli might return as captain in 2025 after stepping down post-IPL 2021. The team's decision to not pursue marquee players has left fans feeling let down.
Big Names Snapped Up by Other Teams
The auction saw other teams securing top players. Punjab Kings acquired Arshdeep Singh for INR 18 Crore (RTM) and Shreyas Iyer for INR 26.75 Crore. Lucknow Super Giants bought Rishabh Pant for INR 27 Crore and David Miller for INR 7.50 Crore. Delhi Capitals secured Mitchell Starc at INR 11.75 Crore and KL Rahul at INR 14 Crore.
Uthappa further criticised RCB's approach: "They haven't gone after Mitchell Starc as they are looking for a gun bowler in those conditions. They should have gone after KL Rahul, they haven't gone after even Rishabh Pant or Shreyas Iyer." He highlighted that with their budget, they could have pursued these players more aggressively.
Fans' Disappointment
Fans have voiced their frustration on social media over RCB's choices during the auction. Many feel that the team missed an opportunity to strengthen their squad significantly with high-profile acquisitions. The lack of big-name signings has raised questions about the team's direction and future plans.
The IPL auction took place on November 24 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with intense bidding wars among franchises eager to bolster their squads ahead of the upcoming season. As teams finalise their rosters, attention now turns to how these new additions will impact performance on the field.
In summary, while other franchises made bold moves to secure top talent, RCB's conservative approach has left fans wondering about their strategy moving forward. With Virat Kohli potentially returning as captain, it remains to be seen how this will influence the team's dynamics in IPL 2025.
