Virat Kohli To Lead Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) In IPL 2025 ?

Virat Kohli's future as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2025 season remains uncertain. Mo Bobat, RCB's Director of Cricket, has not confirmed if Kohli will lead the team again. Kohli stepped down from captaincy in 2021 after a mixed tenure since 2013, which included a runners-up finish in 2016 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

RCB recently announced the retention of Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, Bobat clarified that no decision regarding Kohli's return as captain has been made. "We have not made any decision related to captaincy or on that (Kohli returning as skipper) as yet," Bobat stated in a video released by RCB.

Retention Strategy and Auction Plans

The team is focusing on building a strong Indian core while keeping foreign options open for the upcoming auction. Bobat mentioned that not retaining Faf du Plessis was a significant decision despite his successful leadership over the past two seasons. Under Faf's captaincy, RCB reached playoffs twice in three years, including an impressive comeback this year.

Bobat also highlighted the difficult choice of not retaining pacer Mohammed Siraj. Siraj has been part of RCB since 2018 and has taken 83 wickets in 87 matches. Despite his consistent performances, the team opted to explore more options to create a balanced bowling attack for future competitions.

Focus on Indian Talent

The retention of Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal reflects RCB's strategy to strengthen their Indian lineup. Bobat praised Patidar for his aggressive play against spin and Dayal for his ability to swing the new ball effectively under pressure. Both players had standout performances last season, making their retention an easy decision.

Patidar scored 395 runs in 15 matches during the last IPL season with a strike rate of 177.13, including five half-centuries. Since debuting in 2021, he has accumulated 799 runs at a strike rate of 158.85 across 27 matches. Meanwhile, uncapped player Dayal led RCB's bowling attack in IPL 2024 with 15 wickets in 14 matches at an economy rate of 9.15.

Challenges and Future Prospects

RCB faced challenges this year but managed to secure a playoff spot by winning seven out of their fourteen games, finishing fourth with fourteen points. Their journey ended with a four-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals in the playoffs. The team's focus now shifts towards strengthening their squad through strategic decisions at the upcoming auction.

Cameron Green was another player RCB considered retaining due to his solid performance this year after being traded from Mumbai Indians (MI). However, Green's availability is uncertain due to back surgery that might sideline him for next year's IPL season.

The franchise aims to build on its current strengths while exploring new opportunities during the auction phase. With key players retained and strategic plans underway, RCB looks forward to competing effectively in IPL 2025 and beyond.
