Virat Kohli Announces Retirement from Test Cricket After 14-Year Illustrious Career

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking the end of an era in the longest format of the game.

"It's been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It's tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I'll carry for life...I'll always look back at my Test career with a smile," wrote Kohli in an emotional message to fans and teammates.

A few hours after shocking the cricketing world with the announcement of his retirement from Test cricket, Virat Kohli was seen leaving Mumbai with his wife, actor Anushka Sharma. The power couple made a rare public appearance at the airport on Monday, looking relaxed and smiling for the paparazzi despite the emotional weight of Kohli's farewell from the longest format of the game.

Just a week after Rohit Sharma bid farewell to Test cricket, Virat Kohli has followed suit, sparking conversations about the transition phase for Indian cricket.

A Glorious Career in Numbers

Since making his Test debut in 2011, Kohli has played 123 Test matches, amassing an impressive 9,230 runs at an average of 46.9. His highest score remains an unbeaten 254, and he finishes his red-ball career with 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries - placing him among India's all-time greats.

Legacy as India's Most Successful Test Captain

Kohli also leaves behind a rich legacy as captain. He led India in 68 Tests, winning 40 of them and registering a win percentage of 58.82 - the best among Indian Test captains. His aggressive leadership style, focus on fitness, and passion for Test cricket were often credited with transforming the Indian team into a world-beating unit, both at home and overseas.

Since 2020, Kohli's Test form had been inconsistent, with the 2023 season offering a brief resurgence. However, his showing in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia exposed lingering weaknesses. Although he scored a magnificent century in Perth, his contributions in the other four matches fell short, and India ended the series with a crushing defeat.

Rohit's retirement was the first big blow, and now with Kohli stepping away too, India face the challenge of heading to England with a relatively inexperienced Test squad.

A Leader Who Championed Test Cricket

When MS Dhoni retired midway through the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar series, Kohli took over the captaincy. At that time, India were ranked 7th in the ICC Test rankings. By the time he stepped down in 2022, India had climbed to the top of the table.

Kohli's tenure was marked by a clear focus on Test cricket. He turned India into a dominant force not only on home soil but also in challenging overseas conditions. Over his 123-Test career, Kohli scored 9,230 runs, including 30 centuries, cementing his legacy as one of India's greatest red-ball players.
