Vinod Kambli Health: Ex-Cricketer Struggles To Walk But Shows Respect To Sunil Gavaskar At Wankhede Stadium
Recently, Vinod Kambli made a heartfelt appearance at Wankhede Stadium, marking a significant moment since his discharge from the hospital. At the event, Kambli, a former Indian cricketer known for his outstanding contributions to the sport, was honored in a ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic venue. This gathering was a rare opportunity to see cricket legends, including Kambli himself, Sunil Gavaskar, and Sanjay Manjrekar, come together to commemorate the stadium's rich history. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) orchestrated this grand opening event, highlighting the enduring legacy of Mumbai cricket.

Kambli's presence at the stadium was particularly moving, given his recent health struggles. On December 21, he was hospitalized due to a urinary infection and cramps. The situation seemed more alarming when doctors discovered clots in his brain. Fortunately, after receiving treatment at Akruti Hospital in Thane, Kambli was discharged on January 1. Despite still being on the path to recovery, he showed tremendous spirit by attending the event, engaging with former teammates like Manjrekar and Wasim Jaffer, and even paying his respects to Gavaskar in a touching moment captured on video.
During the felicitation, Kambli reminisced about his remarkable innings at Wankhede Stadium, particularly highlighting his first double century against England. He shared fond memories of the venue and offered words of encouragement to aspiring cricketers, emphasizing the importance of hard work and dedication.
"If anyone wants to play for India like me or Sachin (Tendulkar), then I would advise that you should keep working hard and never leave doing that because that's what Sachin and me did since our childhood days," Kambli stated, underlining the commitment required to achieve greatness in cricket.
The event also served as a tribute to other cricket luminaries who have contributed to Mumbai's storied cricket history. Names like Raju Kulkarni, Chandrakant Pandit, Lalchand Rajput, Shobha Pandit, and Arundhati Ghosh were celebrated for their roles in shaping the legacy of Mumbai cricket.
The 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Wankhede Stadium are set to continue throughout the week, featuring various activities including a special lunch and a health camp named after Polly Umrigar. Additionally, the groundsmen of MCA's clubs and grounds will be honored, along with members of the Mumbai team that played the first first-class match at the stadium in 1974.
