Surya Kumar Yadav's Big Statement On Team India Captaincy

Suryakumar Yadav, who recently took over India's T20I captaincy from Rohit Sharma, showcased his leadership skills in the first20I against Sri Lanka. Despite a strong start by Sri Lanka's openers, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, Suryakumar's strategic decisions played a crucial role in India's defence of their total.

With Sri Lanka at 84/0 in the ninth over, Suryakumar brought back Arshdeep Singh to break the partnership. Arshdeep delivered by removing Mendis, but Sri Lanka continued their aggressive approach. The turning point came when Suryakumar introduced Axar Patel in the 15th over. Axar's spin magic dismissed Kusal Perera and Nissanka, shifting the game in India's favour.

Leadership Over Captaincy

Suryakumar emphasised his desire to be seen as a leader rather than just a captain. "I... I don't want to be a captain; I want to be a leader. That's it. It felt good to see such good support here and in this country," he said in a video posted by BCCI on X.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised Suryakumar's captaincy skills. However, Suryakumar's focus remains on leading the team effectively rather than holding the title of captain.

Strategic Moves

One notable decision was handing the ball to Riyan Parag at a critical juncture. Parag, who had not contributed much with the bat, made significant contributions with the ball. He picked up three wickets while conceding only five runs in his 1.2 overs.

Suryakumar explained his decision: "This Riyan Parag can be special because I have seen him bowl in the IPL as well as in the nets. And I also said on the PC that he has an X-factor."

India successfully defended their total by restricting Sri Lanka to 170 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. They secured an unassailable lead after winning the second T20I on Sunday.
