Gill's return to the T20I squad is anticipated, along with his appointment as India's vice-captain for the tournament. This development follows a report from RevSportz. "With Suryakumar Yadav set to be fit for the tournament, which will be played in T20 format this year, Gill is likely to deputise for him. This will not only mark Gill's return to the T20I setup but also enhance his status as a growing leader in the Indian dressing room across formats," the report said.

Team India's T20 Leadership Dynamics

Following Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirement after India's 2024 T20 World Cup victory, Axar Patel has been serving as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy. Gill's last appearance in a T20I match was during India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, just after the previous year's T20 World Cup.

Suryakumar Yadav is showing signs of regaining full fitness ahead of the Asia Cup. He has been practising in the nets during his rehabilitation at BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE). Meanwhile, Gill has played 21 matches for India in this format, amassing 578 runs with an average of 30.42, including three fifties and a century.

Asia Cup 2025 Challenges

The Asia Cup will take place in the UAE from September 9 to 28, hosted by BCCI. India is grouped with UAE and Pakistan and will begin their campaign against UAE on September 10. The much-anticipated match against Pakistan is slated for September 14.

India enters this tournament as defending champions after securing their eighth Asia Cup title in 2023 by defeating Sri Lanka decisively in the final match.
