Champions Trophy 2025: Shahid Afridi Suggests PCB Not To Send Pakistan Team To India For Any Cricket Event
Shahid Afridi, the former captain of Pakistan's cricket team, has called on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to boycott cricket events in India. He insists that unless India agrees to play in Pakistan, the PCB should take a firm stand. Afridi's comments come amid ongoing tensions surrounding the ICC Champions Trophy, where India has refused to send its team to Pakistan.
Speaking at the Urdu Conference at Karachi Arts Council, Afridi highlighted the need for self-reliance in Pakistan cricket. He urged the PCB to make strong decisions, especially given India's refusal to participate in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The tournament is scheduled between January and March next year.

ICC's Role and Criticism
Afridi also criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC), questioning their priorities. "Even the ICC now has to decide whether its responsibility is to ensure every member nation gets to play cricket or it just wants to make money," he stated. His remarks reflect concerns about fair play versus financial interests within international cricket.
The disagreement over tournament venues has delayed finalising schedules and locations. India demands a "hybrid model," preferring neutral venues instead of travelling to Pakistan for matches. This stance has added complexity to organising the event.
Leadership Changes in Pakistan Cricket
Afridi also addressed leadership issues within Pakistan cricket, citing policy changes as problematic. He mentioned Shaheen Shah Afridi's brief tenure as T20 captain, which ended abruptly after one series. "When Shaheen was made Pakistan T20 captain I was against it and I said that the board should have made Muhammad Rizwan the captain as he was the best choice," Afridi noted.
He further elaborated on how such decisions impact players' morale and stability within the team. The sudden removal of Shaheen from captaincy affected him negatively, according to Afridi.
Support for PCB's Stance
Afridi expressed his support for PCB's firm position regarding equitable cricketing ties with India. He believes that Pakistan must maintain its ground and not compromise on principles when dealing with international cricket relations.
The latest reports suggest that ICC is nearing an agreement on a hybrid model for hosting the Champions Trophy. This development could potentially resolve some of the ongoing disputes between India and Pakistan regarding tournament logistics.
Afridi's call for action highlights broader issues within international cricket governance and bilateral relations between neighbouring countries. His emphasis on self-reliance and principled decision-making resonates with many who seek fairness in sports diplomacy.
