Ruturaj Gaikwad Blazes Maiden ODI Century, Anchors India’s Charge in Raipur

Ruturaj Gaikwad made the most of a rare ODI opportunity, turning it into a powerful statement with his maiden international hundred against South Africa in Raipur on 3 December 2025. The opener steered India's innings in the second ODI with maturity and authority after South Africa opted to bowl first at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium.

Gaikwad and Virat Kohli became the backbone of India's batting effort, stitching together a massive 195-run partnership for the second wicket. Kohli, fresh off a match-winning 135 in the Ranchi ODI, continued in fluent touch, while Gaikwad matched his senior partner with smart rotation of strike and crisp strokeplay.

Gaikwad's century, crafted in just 77 balls, reflected his mix of control and intent. He began steadily, bringing up his first fifty off 52 deliveries, before shifting gears decisively. His next fifty came in only 25 balls, highlighted by aggressive shot selection and confident boundary-hitting.

A crucial momentum shift came in the middle overs against left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj. Gaikwad launched a calculated attack, taking 16 runs in one over and maintaining pressure on the South African bowling unit thereafter. Boundaries flowed, and India's innings gathered strong momentum after an early wicket.

For Gaikwad, the innings carried added significance. With regular captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer sidelined due to injury, Gaikwad was drafted into the XI. By converting the opportunity into a commanding hundred and a dominant stand with Kohli, he strengthened his case for a longer run in the ODI setup.

His knock not only lit up Raipur but also underscored his readiness to take on a larger role in India's white-ball future.
