Rohit Sharma To Be Dropped For Sydney Test?

India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed reporters' concerns about Rohit Sharma's absence at the pre-match press conference in Sydney. "The head coach is here. That should be enough," he said. Rohit had also missed the pre-match media interaction before the third Test in Brisbane, where Shubman Gill spoke instead. The explanation then was that Rohit hadn't attended the optional training session at Gabba.

Rohit's form has been under scrutiny, with an average of 10.93 in his last nine Tests and only 6.2 in this series. He arrived late to India's training on Thursday, although it was an optional session. Despite this, all other players were present. Shubman Gill, dropped for the MCG Test, was among the first to practice at SCG nets.

Rohit's Training Session

During Thursday's session, Rohit initially played foot-volleyball on the main ground before joining his teammates without his kit. He eventually participated in a light 40-minute batting stint facing throw-downs from fielding coach T Dilip and specialist Daya. By then, other frontline batters had completed their practice.

In Melbourne, Rohit showed signs of regaining form or at least confidence in his defence against Australia's bowling attack led by Pat Cummins. He managed to deny them a breakthrough for an hour but eventually fell to a risky flick shot caught by the gully fielder.

Speculation Over Retirement

Reports have surfaced suggesting Rohit might retire after the Sydney Test, raising questions about whether he should step down now while the series is ongoing. This speculation adds to the uncertainty surrounding his role in the team and whether he will play in the upcoming match.

At Brisbane's end, Rohit acknowledged not batting well but felt content with his mental and physical state. "As long as my mind, my body, my feet are moving well, I am pretty happy with how things are panning out for me," he stated two weeks ago.

India's Team Selection

India typically doesn't disclose their XI before a Test match, making Gambhir's reluctance to confirm Rohit's inclusion unusual. As captain, one would expect him to be a definite part of the team and involved in selection decisions.

The new year has brought intrigue for India as they prepare for a crucial Test match at SCG. With questions about Rohit's form and potential retirement looming large, fans eagerly await clarity on India's playing XI and their strategy moving forward.
