The Indian Premier League 2026 season is set for its grand finale on Sunday as Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans prepare to battle for the championship at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. While both teams are aiming to secure their second IPL crowns, weather has become a talking point ahead of the highly anticipated contest, raising questions about what would happen if rain disrupts the final.

With a reserve day in place and specific tournament regulations governing abandoned matches, the IPL has already outlined how the title winner would be determined under different scenarios.

Weather Forecast Brings Relief Ahead of Final

Despite recent weather disturbances across parts of North-West India, Ahmedabad is expected to witness favourable conditions on match day. According to AccuWeather, the city has only a 5% chance of rainfall, while cloud cover is expected to remain around 15%.

The discussion around weather intensified after Gujarat Titans experienced travel delays while returning to Ahmedabad from Chandigarh following their Qualifier 2 victory over Rajasthan Royals. Heavy rain and storms in several northern regions affected flight schedules, but current forecasts suggest there is little threat of similar conditions impacting the final itself.

Reserve Day in Place for IPL 2026 Final

Unlike Qualifier 1, the Eliminator and Qualifier 2, the IPL final has been allotted a reserve day by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

If rain or any other interruption prevents the match from being completed on Sunday, play will continue on Monday, June 1. Importantly, if the game has already started before being halted, it will resume from the exact point where it stopped, including the score, overs and wickets at the time of suspension.

This provision ensures that every effort is made to decide the championship on the field rather than through tournament standings.

What If Rain Washes Out Both Days?

The most unusual scenario would arise if weather conditions prevent a result on both the scheduled final day and the reserve day.

Should that happen, Royal Challengers Bengaluru would be declared IPL 2026 champions because they finished higher than Gujarat Titans in the league standings.

The IPL playing conditions specify that if the final cannot produce a result even after the reserve day, the team with the superior position in the points table at the end of the league stage will be awarded the title.

How RCB and GT Reached the Final

RCB earned a direct place in the final after a dominant 92-run victory over Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1. The result gave Bengaluru a direct route to the title clash.

Gujarat, meanwhile, received a second opportunity through the playoffs system. After their defeat to RCB, they bounced back strongly in Qualifier 2, defeating Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets to book their place in the final.

The summit clash will therefore feature two sides that have been among the standout performers of the season.

Rajat Patidar Eyes Rare Captaincy Milestone

The final could also prove significant for RCB captain Rajat Patidar. Having led Bengaluru to the title last season, Patidar now has the opportunity to guide the franchise to consecutive IPL trophies.

If RCB emerge victorious, Patidar would become only the third captain in IPL history to win back-to-back championships, joining the elite company of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

For Gujarat Titans, victory would secure their second IPL title after their memorable championship-winning debut campaign in 2022. For Bengaluru, it would mark another chapter in what has become one of the league's most successful recent eras.
