Praveen Kumar Criticises Hardik Pandya For Prioritising IPL Over International, Domestic Cricket

Former India cricketer Praveen Kumar has raised concerns over players prioritizing the Indian Premier League (IPL) over national and state duties. This statement comes amid discussions about all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who is returning to play for Mumbai Indians in the IPL after a break from international and domestic cricket due to a back injury. Kumar's comments were shared in a recent conversation with the Times of India, sparking debate among cricket fans.

Praveen Kumar criticized players for skipping national and domestic cricket to remain fit for the IPL. He specifically mentioned Hardik Pandya, emphasizing the importance of representing one's state and country. This critique comes as Pandya prepares to join Mumbai Indians for the upcoming season, following his 15 crore trade from Gujarat Titans. Under Pandya's leadership, Gujarat Titans won the 2022 title and reached the finals in the 2023 season. He is known for his performance under pressure, showcasing hard-hitting and wicket-taking abilities.

Praveen Kumar Criticises Hardik Pandya

"I have been saying this for long. Paisa kamao, kaun mana kar rha hai? Paisa kamane chahiye lekin aise bhi nahi hona chahiye ki aap domestic nahi khel rahe, country ko importance nahi de rahe. (Earn money, who is stopping you? But it shouldn't be like you are not playing for the country or domestic cricket). This thing is now firmly in the mind of players. Mai ek mahine pehle rest kar lunga, fir IPL khel lunga. Ye mentally hota hai, ki mai itne paise kaise chodun (Will rest for a month before the IPL and then play. This happens because mentally you are not willing to let go of that money). But this is not fair at all. A player needs to balance things. Money is important, but this (giving franchise cricket the priority) is wrong," Praveen Kumar said.

Praveen Kumar's comments have resonated with cricket enthusiasts, garnering support on social media. Fans have expressed their agreement with Kumar's viewpoint, highlighting the need for players to balance their commitments between franchise cricket and national responsibilities. Pandya, now 30, is set to captain Mumbai Indians, taking over from Rohit Sharma, a five-time title winner with the team. This marks Pandya's return to Mumbai Indians, where he previously played before his stint with Gujarat Titans.

The debate over players' priorities between the IPL and national cricket continues to be a topic of discussion among fans and experts alike. As the IPL gains prominence, the balance between club and country remains a crucial aspect of a cricketer's career.
