Pakistan Cricket Team Captain Babar Azam Steps Down

Babar Azam, Pakistan's former ODI and T20I captain, has decided to relinquish his leadership role. He shared this news on social media platform X, stating, "I'm sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men's cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month."

Azam expressed that leading the team was an honour but felt it was time to step down and concentrate on his batting. He mentioned that the captaincy added "a significant workload" which impacted his performance. Babar wants to focus on improving his game and spending more time with family.

Babar Azam's Leadership Journey

During his tenure as captain from 2019 to 2024, Babar led Pakistan in 20 Tests, 43 ODIs, and 85 T20Is. His notable achievement was guiding the team to the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, where they were defeated by England. Despite this success, Pakistan did not progress beyond group stages in recent ICC tournaments.

Babar's leadership saw mixed results in major tournaments. Under his captaincy, Pakistan failed to advance past the group stages in both the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup. This led to changes in leadership roles within the team.

Changes in Captaincy

Following a disappointing performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Babar was replaced by Shaheen Shah Afridi as T20I captain but was reinstated after one series. Earlier, Shan Masood took over as Test captain after Babar's removal from that position.

Reflecting on his decision, Babar stated that stepping down would allow him to gain clarity and focus more energy on personal growth and performance. He expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure as captain.

"I'm grateful for your unwavering support and belief in me," Babar said. "Your enthusiasm has meant the world to me. I'm proud of what we've achieved together and excited to continue contributing to the team as a player."

Babar Azam remains committed to contributing positively to Pakistan cricket as a player while prioritising personal development and family time.
