Pakistan Cricket Board Goes High-Tech, Will Use Artificial Intelligence To Analyze Players' Performance

Pakistan's cricket board has turned to artificial intelligence (AI) to address the declining performance of its national team. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi disclosed that AI is now a significant part of their player selection process. This makes PCB the first cricket board to openly use AI for selecting players from domestic leagues.

Naqvi discussed the men's team's recent poor performances, particularly after their loss to Bangladesh at home. He had previously mentioned the need for drastic changes following Pakistan's early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. "The problem is the selection committee has no pool to turn to from which to select players," Naqvi stated.

AI in Player Selection

The chairman explained that 80% of the 150 players selected for the Champions Cup were chosen using AI, with human selectors contributing only 20%. "These 150 players that have been selected, 80% of it has been done by AI (Artificial intelligence), and 20% using humans. Nobody can challenge that," Naqvi said.

He emphasised that this approach ensures transparency and fairness in player selection. "We'll have records and we'll all be able to see transparently who deserves a place in the team," he added. The Champions Cup, ending in September, will provide comprehensive records for all players.

Challenges and Solutions

Naqvi highlighted issues with the previous system, where many players lacked proper records. "We had a lot of players for which we didn't have records. This Cup will make domestic cricket strong, we'll have a pool of 150 players," he said. The new system aims to create a robust database for future selections.

The PCB chief also addressed public expectations for immediate changes. "People said 'do it all today, slit the throats of four-five players, and get rid of them'. You can't dump someone unless you have a better one to replace them," Naqvi remarked.

The integration of AI into player selection is expected to bring significant improvements in identifying talent. Naqvi believes this method will help build a stronger domestic cricket structure and ensure only deserving players make it to the national team.

"The Champions Cup will produce great talent, and we'll have records for the games that happen," Naqvi noted. This initiative is part of PCB's broader strategy to enhance performance through data-driven decisions.

By leveraging AI, PCB aims to eliminate biases and ensure merit-based selections. This innovative approach could set a precedent for other cricket boards worldwide looking to modernise their selection processes.

The new system promises accountability and performance-based evaluations, ensuring underperforming players are replaced efficiently. "Anyone who isn't performing will be immediately replaced," Naqvi confirmed.

This move towards AI-driven selections marks a significant shift in how cricket talent is identified and nurtured in Pakistan. It reflects a growing trend across various industries where technology plays an increasingly vital role in decision-making processes.

The PCB's adoption of AI could potentially revolutionise cricket management by providing accurate data analysis and reducing human error in selections. As this system evolves, it may offer valuable insights into player development and team dynamics.

This strategic change underscores PCB's commitment to improving its cricketing standards through innovative solutions. By embracing technology, they hope to foster a more competitive and successful national team in future tournaments.
