MS Dhoni Applies For 'Captain Cool' Trademark

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, affectionately known as 'Captain Cool', has taken steps to secure this nickname legally. He has filed a trademark application for the name, which fans have used for years to describe his calm leadership style. This move aims to give him exclusive rights to use 'Captain Cool' in sports training and coaching services.

According to the Trade Marks Registry portal, MS Dhoni's application has been accepted and advertised. The trademark was published in the official trademark journal on June 16, 2025. Mansi Aggarwal, Dhoni's lawyer, expressed excitement about this development in trademark law. She highlighted how it underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal.

Trademark Challenges

The journey to secure the trademark wasn't without challenges. Initially, the Registry raised an objection under Section 11(1) of the Trade Marks Act. They were concerned that the phrase might cause confusion due to a similar mark already existing. However, Dhoni's legal team argued that 'Captain Cool' is uniquely associated with him.

The legal team emphasised that this nickname has been widely used by fans and media over the years. It has become an integral part of Dhoni's public identity. The phrase 'Captain Cool' has acquired a distinct secondary meaning through its long-standing association with Mr Dhoni, according to his lawyer.

Public Identity and Branding

The Registry agreed with Dhoni's team that 'Captain Cool' is more than just a catchy tag; it's a significant part of his commercial image. His reputation as 'Captain Cool' is well-known among cricket enthusiasts worldwide. The nickname reflects his calm demeanour under pressure during significant cricketing moments.

This case highlights how celebrities can leverage personal branding and unique identities to protect their business image. By securing trademarks for such nicknames, public figures can safeguard their brand and ensure its exclusive use in specific sectors.

Dhoni's intention is not only to protect his brand but also to utilise it effectively in sports-related services. With this trademark, he aims to expand his influence beyond cricket into broader sports training and coaching domains.
