Mohammed Shami Fails To Make A Comeback! Shubman Gill To Lead India Vs England For Test Series; Check Squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced the squad for the upcoming test series against England. BCCI selectors panel led by Ajit Agarkar named Shubman Gill as the 37th Test captain of India, while Rishabh Pant has been appointed as vice-captain. Senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who was eyeing a return in India's test team, failed to make it. According to the reports, Mohammed Shami did not achieve the fitness level needed to play long format.

The five-Test series against England will commence on June 20 at Headingley.

For the highly anticipated England tour, the selectors have assembled an 18-man squad, infusing new talent alongside seasoned players. Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh received their maiden Test call-ups, while seasoned pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were included in the lineup.

Abhimanyu Easwaran, the India A captain who has been with the squad, was also given another chance to prove his mettle.

Gill's captaincy comes at a time when the Indian cricket team is navigating through a transition phase, seeking to rejuvenate the squad with young talents following the retirement of key players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. This generational shift aims to address the team's recent struggles, including failing to qualify for the 2023-2025 World Test Championship final after defeats against New Zealand and Australia. With Gill at the helm, there's a collective hope that he will steer the team towards a new era of consistency and triumphs.

Despite Gill's remarkable achievements, including scoring 1,893 runs in 32 Test matches with five centuries, his leadership capabilities in the longest format remain relatively untested. His track record in SENA countries and the West Indies, with an average of just 25 and only two fifties in 24 innings, raises questions about his readiness for this role. Since his memorable 91-run knock in the Brisbane Test in 2021, Gill has struggled to replicate such performances in these challenging regions.
