Lack Of Sensitivity Towards Legacy...: Sunil Gavaskar Unhappy Over Renaming Of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi Trophy
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his discontent over the decision to rename the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He believes this change disregards the contributions of the late Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi to cricket. The trophy was originally named in honour of Pataudi, and Gavaskar feels that renaming it lacks sensitivity towards his legacy.
The upcoming Test series between India and England is set to begin on June 20. Through discussions between the BCCI and ECB, it has been decided to rename the series' trophy. This decision has sparked controversy, especially among those who hold Pataudi's contributions in high regard.

Gavaskar's Concerns Over Trophy Rebranding
In his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar shared his concerns about this rebranding decision. "The recent news that the ECB is going to retire the Pataudi Trophy, given to the winners of the Test series between England and India in England, is disturbing indeed," he wrote. He highlighted that this is unprecedented for a trophy named after individual players.
Gavaskar further elaborated on how such decisions might affect future cricketers. He hopes that if any Indian player is approached for a similar honour, they would decline out of respect for past legends. This would also prevent their own names from being retired posthumously.
A Call for Sensitivity in Cricket
The renaming decision lies with the ECB, although it's likely that BCCI was informed. Gavaskar emphasised that such actions show insensitivity towards historical contributions made by players like Pataudi in both England and India.
He urged future generations to consider preserving the legacy of cricket legends rather than seeking personal accolades through trophies named after them. This sentiment reflects a deep respect for cricket history and its pioneers.
