KL Rahul To Open For India After Shubman Gill Ruled Out Of Perth Test In BGT 2024

KL Rahul's return to training has provided a significant boost for India as they prepare for the Perth Test. With Shubman Gill sidelined due to a thumb injury, Rahul's presence at the nets on Sunday was reassuring. He had been hit on the elbow by a delivery from Prasidh Krishna during an intra-squad match, causing him to leave the field early.

Rahul's participation in Sunday's training session at the WACA lasted nearly three hours. Despite not appearing as fluent as before his injury, he showed no signs of discomfort. His improved fitness status comes just as Gill's absence from the first Test is almost confirmed. Gill sustained his injury while fielding in the slips during India's practice match.

Injury Concerns and Team Preparations

Gill's injury occurred a week before the Perth Test, leaving uncertainty about his position in the batting order. There is also no confirmation yet on whether Rohit Sharma will be available for the first Test. Sharma recently became a father for the second time, which may affect his travel plans to Perth.

During India's intra-squad match simulation, Virat Kohli batted without any visible discomfort despite facing challenges against short-pitched deliveries. Kohli scored 15 and 30 not out across two innings on a relatively calm WACA pitch. Meanwhile, India's main bowlers, led by vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah, were active during both match simulations and Sunday's training.

Training Sessions and Venue Changes

The Indian team has completed their initial training block at the WACA after three days of net practice followed by three days of match simulation on the centre wicket. From Tuesday onwards, they will continue their preparations at Optus Stadium, where the first Test is scheduled to begin on November 22.

While some sessions were open to media coverage earlier in the week, weekend activities were held privately due to logistical reasons. Meanwhile, hosts Australia are set to commence their own preparations with a training session at the WACA starting Monday.

The Indian squad's readiness for the upcoming Test series remains crucial amid these developments. The team's ability to adapt quickly and overcome injuries will be key as they face Australia in Perth.
