Jasprit Bumrah Rested Again, Yet Rising: Bumrah’s ICC Ranking Surge Sparks Debate

Even in absence, Jasprit Bumrah continues to make noise.

India's premier fast bowler has climbed to fifth in the ICC T20I rankings without playing a single match since the World Cup on March 8 - a rise that says as much about his quality as it does about his increasing absence from the format under workload management.

Bumrah now sits on 702 rating points, benefitting from South Africa pacer Corbin Bosch slipping down the ladder after missing the ongoing series. But while the rankings move upward, Bumrah's actual presence on the field remains limited.

The 30-year-old was central to India's World Cup success, finishing as joint-highest wicket-taker with Varun Chakaravarthy, picking up 14 wickets. Yet, since then, he has been consistently kept out of T20Is as part of a broader plan to manage his workload - a strategy that is becoming a defining feature of his career.

With no T20Is scheduled for India until July and the team already looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup, Bumrah's involvement in the shortest format appears increasingly selective. The rankings may still reward him, but regular game time in T20Is seems far from guaranteed.

Among other movers, Tilak Varma has climbed to sixth in the T20I batting rankings after New Zealand's Tim Seifert dropped points due to absence.

In ODIs, Salman Ali Agha was one of the biggest gainers, jumping nine places after a century against Bangladesh. He scored 175 runs in the series, even though Pakistan lost 1-2.

Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz also surged in the rankings, moving up to seventh among bowlers and second in the all-rounders' list, just behind Azmatullah Omarzai - underlining a strong individual showing despite mixed team results.
