IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Reappoints Mahela Jayawardene As Head Coach; Mark Boucher Sacked

Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as the head coach of Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025, succeeding Mark Boucher. With a successful history at MI, Jayawardene aims to build on the team's legacy.

Mahela Jayawardene is returning to the Mumbai Indians as head coach, replacing Mark Boucher for IPL 2025. Under Boucher's leadership, MI ended last in the 2024 IPL standings with Hardik Pandya as captain. Jayawardene previously coached MI from 2017 to 2022 before becoming the global head of performance for the franchise.

"My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever and we did very well," Jayawardene said in a statement.

Jayawardene's Return and Vision

Jayawardene expressed excitement about his return, stating, "Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to."

During his previous tenure as head coach, Jayawardene led MI to three IPL titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020. His leadership was instrumental in shaping a successful team dynamic.

Boucher's Tenure and Achievements

Boucher served as head coach for MI during IPL 2023 and 2024. The team reached the playoffs in 2023 but lost to Gujarat Titans in the second qualifier. However, they struggled in 2024, winning only four out of 14 matches.

Akash Ambani commented on Jayawardene's return: "We are thrilled to have Mahela back as the Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. With our global teams having found their footing within their ecosystems, the opportunity to bring him back to MI arose."

Global Impact and Future Prospects

In his role as global head of performance since 2022, Jayawardene contributed significantly across various leagues. The franchise secured trophies with MI (WPL), MI NY (MLC), and MIE (ILT20) under his guidance.

Ambani also acknowledged Boucher's contributions: "I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Boucher for his contribution over the last two seasons. His expertise and dedication were pivotal during his time, and has now become an integral member of the MI family."

The decision marks a new chapter for Mumbai Indians as they aim for success in upcoming seasons with Jayawardene at the helm once again.
