IPL 2025: Chennai Super Kings Will Not Bid For KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Says CSK Official

For the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auction, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will most probably not bid for star players like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Talking to the media CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said management has chosen to retain key players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, and MS Dhoni. With only one Right To Match (RTM) card available, they are likely to use it for Devon Conway or Rachin Ravindra.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Mega Auction is scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant

Despite big names like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant in the auction pool, Kasi acknowledged that CSK might struggle to compete with other teams for these top Indian players. "We had discussions with Ruturaj, the captain, MS (Dhoni), and coach Stephen Fleming before we decided on the retentions. We were very clear that the players that helped the team grow, stabilise in the previous years were the ones very important for the CSK team to continue further," Kasi told former CSK batter Ambati Rayudu during an interaction on Provoke TV.

Retention Strategy and Budget Constraints

Kasi explained that retaining these core players meant a reduced budget for bidding at the auction. He stated, "It was very easy to decide on the retentions -- Gaikwad, Jaddu, MS, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana. But we knew that if we retained these players, we would have a lesser purse to go into the auction." This decision reflects their commitment to maintaining team stability over acquiring new high-profile talent.

The deadline for IPL franchises to submit their retained player lists was October 31. Each team could keep up to six players with a maximum of five being capped players. This rule shaped CSK's retention choices as they aimed to balance experience and budget constraints effectively.

Competing Teams' Financial Positions

Other teams have varying financial positions heading into the auction. Punjab Kings (PBKS) hold the largest purse at Rs 110.5 crore after retaining only two uncapped players. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) follows with Rs 83 crore while Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have Rs 69 crore available. Gujarat Titans also remain competitive with INR 69 crore left for spending.

While CSK's strategy focuses on retaining proven performers within budget limits, other franchises may leverage their larger purses to secure marquee signings like Pant or Rahul. The dynamics of this year's auction will be influenced by each team's financial flexibility and strategic priorities.

As CSK prepares for this crucial event in Riyadh later this month, fans eagerly anticipate how their beloved franchise will navigate these challenges while staying true to its core values of loyalty and consistency.
