IPL 2025: 5 Reasons Behind Mumbai Indians' Loss To Punjab Kings In Qualifier 2

Ahmedabad, June 2: Mumbai Indians' dream of a record-extending sixth IPL title came to a screeching halt after a five-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Despite posting a challenging 203/6 on the board, MI failed to defend the total, as Shreyas Iyer played one of the greatest playoff knocks in IPL history - an unbeaten 81 off 41 balls - to power Punjab into the final.

IPL 2025 Reasons Behind MI s Loss

Chasing 204, PBKS were under pressure early on, but Iyer's calm and calculated assault, especially in the final overs, turned the tide. He smashed 26 runs off the 19th over to seal the deal with an over to spare.

With this loss, Mumbai Indians bowed out of the tournament and extended their unwanted record of never reaching the final after playing the Eliminator. The Punjab Kings, meanwhile, entered their second-ever IPL final and will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the 2025 crown.

After the game, MI captain Hardik Pandya admitted that his team was outplayed and praised Shreyas Iyer's brilliance. "The way Shreyas batted, took his chances and some of the shots he played were really outstanding," Pandya said in the post-match presentation.

The MI captain noted that 203 was a par score on the surface but admitted that MI's execution with the ball let them down. "In these big games, it really matters. They were really calm, put us under pressure and I think we were not able to execute the way we wanted," Pandya remarked.

Importantly, Pandya didn't blame the pitch but pointed fingers at his bowling unit's poor execution. He reflected on his own captaincy decisions, notably not bowling Jasprit Bumrah earlier, with 41 needed off the last four overs.

"In hindsight, it would have been different," he said. "Boom knowing the situation, if even 18 balls are left, Jassi can be Jassi and do something special - but it just didn't happen today."

Here are 5 key reasons for Mumbai Indians' defeat in IPL 2025 Qualifier 2

1. Failure to Defend a 200-Plus Total for the First Time

Mumbai Indians had never lost an IPL match defending 200+ before. But in this high-stakes game, they faltered for the first time, unable to apply pressure on Punjab's middle order. The death bowling, in particular, lacked bite, and they conceded 26 runs in the 19th over-effectively ending their campaign.

2. Poor Utilisation of Bumrah in Death Overs

Hardik Pandya's decision to hold Jasprit Bumrah back proved costly. With 41 needed off the final four overs, Bumrah wasn't brought on until the 18th, when the game had already tilted. While Pandya defended the move, suggesting Bumrah could still work magic with fewer balls, the decision backfired as Ashwani Kumar and Reece Topley were taken to the cleaners.

Inconsistent Bowling Performances

Except for a few tight overs in the middle phase, MI's bowlers lacked consistency. Reece Topley, Ashwani Kumar, and even captain Hardik couldn't maintain pressure. Ashwani, who had bowled impressively earlier in the tournament, was smashed for 26 runs in the 19th over, and that one over sealed Mumbai's fate.

Loss of Set Batters at Crucial Moments

Surya Kumar Yadav and Tilak Varma were cruising during a dangerous 72-run stand but fell in quick succession after scoring identical 44s. Both looked well-set to take the team past 220. Their untimely dismissals disrupted MI's momentum, allowing PBKS to claw back in the death overs and restrict MI to a par score instead of a match-winning one.

Overdependence on Individual Brilliance

While MI had standout performers like SKY and Bumrah all season, their overreliance on individual brilliance caught up with them in crunch situations. The middle-order didn't step up when needed, and none of the bowlers, apart from Bumrah, looked threatening under pressure. The collective failure to perform as a unit under high pressure became a major downfall.

As Mumbai Indians reflect on another playoff heartbreak, questions will be raised about their tactical calls and inability to step up in crunch matches. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings and Shreyas Iyer march ahead with momentum and belief, hoping to script history in the final.
