IPL 2024 Auction, Jeddah: New Frontiers, Big Names, Unpredictable Dynamics
The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction this season ventures into uncharted territory, not just because it is being held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia-a region with little cricketing history-but due to a host of uncertainties that could significantly impact player valuations, auction dynamics, and proceedings over the coming days.
Punjab Kings, Rishabh Pant, and Heinrich Klaasen are expected to play pivotal roles in shaping the auction in Jeddah, reported CricBuzz. These elements, coupled with the introduction of the new Right to Match (RTM) clause, add a layer of unpredictability to the event.

The RTM Clause: A Game-Changer?
A key point of interest is whether franchises will take bold risks with unmatchable bids or adopt a conservative approach when countering the RTM. Conversations with franchises suggest that final bid increments are likely to be measured rather than extravagant, indicating that the RTM twist may have limited influence. However, as with all pre-auction speculation, these predictions should be taken with caution. Notably, 14 RTM options are available, with Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore holding the most, at four and three respectively.
Punjab Kings, Pant, and the Auction Narrative
Punjab Kings are set to dominate the initial stages of the auction, entering with the largest purse of ₹110.5 crore. This affords them a unique opportunity to rebuild their squad for the next decade. They are closely followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore, with ₹83 crore. Wherever these two teams participate, player valuations are expected to skyrocket.
Pant is arguably the marquee player of this auction, and his departure from Delhi Capitals has generated significant intrigue. His cryptic social media posts, such as, *"My retention wasn't about the money for sure, that I can say,"* have raised eyebrows and fuelled speculation. Reports suggest his demands for Yuvraj Singh as a mentor and Lalit Yadav's inclusion may have contributed to his exit.
While Delhi Capitals may exercise an RTM option to retain Pant, he has also been linked to Chennai Super Kings due to his rapport with MS Dhoni. However, with a modest purse of ₹55 crore, Chennai might struggle to secure him. Punjab Kings, with their financial muscle, could easily acquire Pant, but his history with Punjab's coach Ricky Ponting from their time at Delhi Capitals could influence this decision.
Another intriguing subplot involves Heinrich Klaasen, the most expensive retained player this season at ₹23 crore. The auction will reveal whether Pant can surpass this valuation. Despite being less dominant in white-ball cricket, Pant's star power and marketability are expected to attract significant bids. Former cricketer Suresh Raina has predicted a price between ₹25-30 crore for Pant.
Rahul, Iyer, and the Elite Players
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are the other marquee names generating buzz. Rumours suggest Delhi Capitals may be targeting Iyer, though their ₹73 crore purse could limit their ability to compete with wealthier franchises like Punjab Kings or RCB. Kolkata Knight Riders, with ₹51 crore, are also reportedly interested in reacquiring their former captain.
Rahul, recently released by Lucknow Super Giants, remains a strong contender despite a turbulent year. His leadership qualities make him an attractive option for teams like KKR, RCB, and Delhi. However, Punjab is unlikely to bid for Rahul due to past history, making RCB a likely destination.
A key unknown is how many players will cross the ₹10 crore mark this year. In the 2022 mega auction, 11 players achieved this feat, with Ishan Kishan fetching ₹15.25 crore. This time, the auction will determine who joins this elite group of IPL high rollers.
Jeddah: The Journey into the Unknown
The decision to host the auction in Jeddah has raised questions, with many franchises seeking clarification from the IPL authorities. While the reasons remain unclear, the event promises to be an intriguing journey into the unknown, with answers expected in the days ahead.
