India Announces Test Squad for NZ Tour: Bumrah Takes Vice-Captain Role, Shami Misses Out
Jasprit Bumrah, a prominent figure in India's Test team, has stepped up as the vice-captain for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand. This comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (B) revealed a 15-member squad, which remains mostly unchanged from the team that recently claimed a 2-0 victory over Bangladesh. Notably, Mohammed Shami, still recovering from an ankle injury, is missing the lineup.

The selection of Bumrah as vice-captain is noteworthy, especially amidst speculation that Rohit Sharma, the team's captain, might miss one of the first two Tests against Australia later in the year. Despite not having an official vice-captain in the recent series against Bangladesh, Bumrah's leadership capabilities are not new to the team. He led the squad in a Test match against England in July 2022, although India faced a loss.
In the reserves, the pace department has been bolstered with the inclusion of Mayank Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna. Mayank Yadav's inclusion hints at his potential participation in the Australian tour for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a sentiment echoed by many cricket enthusiasts and experts. Reddy, with his all-round capabilities, also stands a chance to debut in the Test series, fulfilling India's search for a pace-bowling all-rounder.
The absence of Mohammed Shami from the squad is a significant point of discussion. The 34-year-old fast bowler has been out of action since the 2023 ODI World Cup final, undergoing surgery and missing Bengal's initial Ranji Trophy matches due to his ongoing recovery. Shami's absence marks a substantial gap in India's bowling lineup, emphasizing the need for the selected reserves to step up and fill the void.
The announced squad for the New Zealand series includes Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), along with key players such as Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant. The inclusion of both young talents and experienced cricketers like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja showcases India's balanced approach to maintaining its stronghold in Test cricket.
