The incident left Washington visibly frustrated with Akash Deep's lacklustre running between the wickets. Just before this delivery, Akash had switched bats to one gifted by Virat Kohli but met a similar fate as Kohli in this match. He was run out after scoring only four runs.

Despite these setbacks, Washington played a vital role for India lower down the order. He remained unbeaten on 38 runs from 36 balls with a strike rate exceeding 105. His innings included four fours and two sixes, helping India achieve a narrow lead.

The Indian team eventually got all out for 263 runs, securing a modest lead of 28 runs over New Zealand. Shubman Gill emerged as the top scorer with his impressive 90-run innings. Rishabh Pant also contributed significantly by scoring 60 runs under pressure.
