IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant Injured, Out For 6 Weeks; Ishan Kishan Set To Join

India's vice-captain and star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out for the remainder of the England Test series after sustaining a toe fracture on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. The injury occurred while Pant attempted a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, with the ball taking an inside edge and striking his right foot. He immediately called for medical assistance, and subsequent scans confirmed a fractured toe. Pant was forced to retire hurt on 37 runs and has since been unable to walk without support.

This development comes as a major setback for the Indian team, already grappling with multiple injuries. Pant's dynamic presence in the middle order and his sharp skills behind the stumps had played a vital role throughout the series. With his confirmed six-week recovery period, Pant will not be available for the fifth and final Test at The Oval, scheduled from July 31 to August 4.

The injury has further compounded India's injury woes. Key players including Nitish Kumar Reddy (knee), Akash Deep (groin), and Arshdeep Singh (thumb) have also been ruled out of the ongoing and upcoming matches due to various fitness concerns. The team management initially explored the possibility of Pant returning to bat under pain management, but medical staff advised against it, citing the severity of the pain and the player's inability to walk properly.

In Pant's absence, Dhruv Jurel will continue to handle the wicketkeeping duties for the remainder of the fourth Test. However, for the fifth Test, selectors are preparing to bring in Ishan Kishan. Kishan, who recently participated in County Championship matches, is considered the ideal replacement due to his first-class match readiness and dual skills with the bat and gloves.

India will now approach the final match at The Oval with a reshuffled squad and will be hoping to overcome these injury challenges to end the series on a high note. Pant's injury not only affects immediate team composition but also marks a tough personal moment in his comeback journey following his previous long-term layoff after a car accident in 2022.
