Ind vs Eng: English Expert Criticises Jasprit Bumrah, Says Speedster Must Play Edgbaston Test
As India gears up for the second Test against England at Edgbaston in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, former England cricketer Mark Butcher has voiced surprise at the possibility of Jasprit Bumrah being rested. Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly Podcast, Butcher stressed that team strategy and series context must outweigh individual preferences-especially with India trailing 0-1 in the five-match series.
"Bumrah is going to be a huge talking point as to whether or not this is one of his three Test matches. I think it has to be, it absolutely has to be. Six-day break after Headingley, 1-0 down, he plays," said Butcher.

"I know he wants to play at Lord's [in the third Test], but the needs of the team and the series are more important than his wish to play a Test at Lord's."
India's Bowling Puzzle
Bumrah was India's standout bowler in the opening Test at Headingley, claiming a five-wicket haul in the first innings. However, the rest of India's pace attack struggled. Prasidh Krishna, in particular, had a difficult outing-finishing with figures of 5/224 and an economy rate of 6.40, among the worst for an Indian pacer over a full Test match.
Butcher suggested that India should rethink their bowling strategy, possibly replacing Prasidh with bowlers who can better disrupt England's attacking mindset.
Arshdeep and Kuldeep in the Frame?
Butcher highlighted left-arm swing as a potential weapon, advocating for the inclusion of Arshdeep Singh or even Kuldeep Yadav in the XI.
"If Arshdeep comes in, I think Prasidh Krishna was found wanting.... If you can manage it, you go Siraj, Bumrah, Arshdeep, Kuldeep, Jadeja-and take the cards where they fall with your batting," he explained.
He also questioned the value of including Shardul Thakur, suggesting that his current form doesn't justify a place solely for his batting, especially when his bowling hasn't been impactful.
Team India at a Crossroads
With the second Test starting Wednesday at Edgbaston, India faces a crucial moment in the series. Bumrah's fitness and availability could significantly influence the outcome, and Butcher's comments underline the growing pressure on team management to make bold, match-winning decisions.
