ICC's Umpire Choices For IND vs AUS World Cup 2023 Final Leave Indian Fans Uneasy
The announcement from the ICC naming Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough as on-field umpires for the India vs Australia World Cup 2023 final at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium has stirred concern among Indian fans. Revealed on Friday night, just two days before the significant final, the disclosure has triggered anxiety, particularly concerning Kettleborough's involvement for the second time in a World Cup final.

Kettleborough's return to officiating may worry Indian supporters. He has been present in crucial ICC tournament knockout matches involving India multiple times. Across eight knockout encounters since India's last ICC title in 2013, Kettleborough was part of the umpiring panel in seven of these nerve-wracking games.
He stood as the on-field umpire in five pivotal India matches, including the 2014 T20 World Cup final, the 2015 World Cup semi-final, the 2017 Champions Trophy final, and the 2019 World Cup semi-final. He also served as the TV umpire in the two World Test Championship finals that India lost. The only knockout match where Kettleborough wasn't involved was the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final, yet India suffered a loss in that game as well.
Illingworth also appears frequently in India's knockout matches, having been the on-field umpire in three out of India's last eight ICC knockout encounters. Interestingly, Illingworth and Kettleborough were the on-field umpires during India's last World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
The frequent appearances of Illingworth and Kettleborough in India matches are primarily due to ICC regulations mandating neutral umpires in ICC events. As India and England have had only one encounter in ICC knockout matches in the past 12 years, both being Englishmen and ICC elite panel officials, Illingworth and Kettleborough have emerged as the most common umpires for India games.
Both Illingworth and Kettleborough, promoted to the ICC International List on the same day in November 2009, were also involved as on-field umpires in this week's semi-finals. Illingworth officiated India's victory over New Zealand, while Kettleborough oversaw Australia's thrilling win against South Africa.
These highly experienced umpires have received recognition for their excellence, with both being previous recipients of the David Shepherd Trophy, awarded to the ICC's Umpire of the Year. Kettleborough secured the award for three consecutive years between 2013 and 2015, and Illingworth joined the esteemed list in 2019 and 2022.
For the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia in Ahmedabad on Sunday, the officiating team includes Joel Wilson as the third umpire, Chris Gaffaney as the fourth umpire, and match referee Andy Pycroft, all of whom played roles in the semi-finals.
