ICC Slaps Panelties On Rohit Sharma And Team, Here's What Happened

For playing at a slow over-rate during the first Test against South Africa at Centurion, the International Cricket Council (ICC) slapped Team India with penalties on Friday. According to the reports, the ICC has awarded 2 demerit points for the World Test Championship (WTC) and a fine of 10 % of the match fee. The Centurion Test, which ended with a disappointing result for Team India, only within three days, has amplified skipper Rohit Sharma and team management's worries.

India faced a humiliating defeat against host South Africa by an inning and 34 runs in the two-match series.

ICC slaps Team India with penalties

ICC in its statement said, "Rohit Sharma's side has been docked two crucial ICC World Test Championship points in the opening Test against South Africa for bowling two overs short and has also been fined 10% of their match fee." "India captain Rohit Sharma pled guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing," ICC added.

The action was taken against Team India after the on-field umpires, Paul Reiffel and Langton Rusere, the third umpire Ahsan Raza, and the fourth umpire Stephen Harris collectively leveled the charges as per rule 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The ICC's action has put Team India in a delicate position within the World Test Championship standings. Before the penalty, Rohit Sharma and men were in the fifth spot with 16 points and a Percentage of Points (PCT) of 44.44.

And now, after the penalty, they've slipped beneath Australia at the sixth position on points TWC tally with 38.39 points.
