Cricket World Cup: KL Rahul is raising his stocks in ODIs despite being a soft target over social media
ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: India cricketer KL Rahul, who has been a frequent target of social media criticism, has experienced a remarkable resurgence in One Day International (ODI) cricket.
The Karnataka cricketer has always made some strong comebacks after being pushed against the wall and against Australia in his team's opening game against a formidable Australian bowling attack, Rahul played of his best ODI knocks ever. His match-winning knock of 97* at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will be etched in the memories of cricket fans.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including a difficult period during the Asia Cup 2022 and T20 World Cup 2022, as well as being sidelined due to injuries, Rahul's determination and resilience have consistently shone through and something similar was on full display against Australia under testing conditions at Chepauk.
Following a lengthy hiatus due to injury and a period spent outside the starting eleven, fate smiled upon Rahul when he was given an opportunity due to an injury to Shreyas Iyer. From that moment onwards, there was no looking back for Rahul.
Rahul's unbeaten knock of 97 from 115 deliveries showcased a batting masterclass. His crowning moment was hitting the winning six, a memorable instance that will be remembered for a long time. This exceptional performance played a pivotal role in bringing an end to Australia's 27-year unbeaten streak in World Cup opening matches.
When Rahul took to the field alongside Virat Kohli during the third over, India found themselves in a dire straits with just two runs on the board and top-three batters back in the dressing room, all dismissed for naught. It was only the first instance in Indian cricket when both the openers were dismissed for a duck since their 1983 WC match against Zimbabwe.
However, Rahul emerged as the dependable partner that Kohli desperately needed, and together, they exhibited class and elegance during their match-winning partnership, amassing a total of 165 runs. Rahul and Kohli's performance must have freshened up the memories of fans who saw the former India captain Kapil Dev's marathon 175-run knock against Zimbabwe at Turn Bridge Wells in the 1983 World Cup.
The 165-run alliance between Kohli and Rahul made the daunting task of chasing a 200-run target appear deceptively straightforward, despite the challenging pitch conditions. Though it took them 41.2 overs to overhaul the target, but it was a testament to their tenacity. Their partnership followed the early dismissals of three top-order Indian batsmen who failed to trouble the scorers.
Rahul's performance highlighted precisely why he is held in such high esteem. On a pitch where Indian spinners held sway, Rahul adeptly countered Adam Zampa with well-executed late cuts, back cuts, and an elegant extra cover drive in a single over. His ability to match Kohli's strokes and his endurance, both as a wicketkeeper for 50 overs and as a batsman for another 41.2 overs, underscored his preparedness for any cricketing challenge.
In a remarkable display of team spirit, when Rahul realized that Kohli was on the brink of his 48th ODI century, he selflessly focused on accumulating singles and doubles, prioritizing the team's victory. Rahul's innings featured eight boundaries and two sixes, with the second six being the decisive shot that secured India's triumph. His outstanding performance once again reaffirmed his stature as a formidable presence in ODI cricket.
