Harbhajan Singh Expresses Optimism For India In Border Gavaskar Trophy Despite Recent Setbacks

Despite a recent loss, Harbhajan Singh remains hopeful for India's performance against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He stresses the importance of a strong start in the first Test.

Despite India's unexpected 0-3 defeat at home to New Zealand, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, popular as Turbanator, is optimistic about their chances against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The first Test is set to begin in Perth next Friday. However, India faces a setback as Shubman Gill has reportedly fractured his thumb, casting doubt on his participation. Additionally, captain Rohit Sharma is absent as he recently became a father for the second time and hasn't yet arrived in Australia.

Harbhajan Singh believes that the Australian pitches will be more favourable for batting compared to India's turning tracks. "It's 50-50. I am not considering the cricket India played recently because conditions were different," he said on Jatin Sapru's YouTube channel. He noted that even experienced batters seemed lost against New Zealand and suggested that playing Ranji Trophy wouldn't help.

Importance of the First Test

The former off-spinner emphasised the significance of the series opener for India. "I feel India batters will come good. We need a player like Pujara, who can grind in and make the ball old," Harbhajan stated. He acknowledged KL Rahul's criticism but praised him as a class player. Harbhajan predicted a balanced series but gave Australia a slight advantage due to their home conditions and India's shaken confidence after their recent loss.

Harbhajan stressed that a strong start in Perth is crucial for India to mount a solid challenge throughout the series. "The first Test will be very important," he added. If India performs well initially, they could pose a significant threat to Australia. Conversely, failing to start well might lead to escalating problems for the team.

In summary, while India's recent form raises concerns, Harbhajan Singh remains hopeful about their prospects against Australia. The upcoming series promises an exciting contest with both teams having strengths and weaknesses to address.
