Gujarat Titans Star Pacer Mohammed Shami To Miss IPL 2024, Say Reports

As the countdown begins for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) slated from next month, Gujarat Titans faced a big blow on Wednesday as reports claiming Indian speedster Mohammad Shami may miss the tournament surfaced online. According to the reports, the senior pacer may miss the IPL 2024 following ankle injury. The reports added that Shami will undergo an ankle surgery in the United Kingdom in the coming week.

A BCCI official, who requested anonymity, told the media, "Shami was in London in last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he can start light running and take it from thereon. But the injection hasn't worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for UK for surgery. IPL seems out of question."

The pacer has been away from the game since Men's ICC Cricket World Cup held in November 2023. Shami was one of the architects for Men in Blue's 10 match winning streak. He clinched 24 wickets in only 7 World Cup matches, however, Team India fell a step short of lifting the World Cup. For his match winning performaces and continuous contribution for betterment of Indian cricket, the Government of India conferred prestigious Khel Ratna Award to Mohammed Shami.

Mohammed Shami has taken 229 Test, 195 ODI and 24 T20 wickets in his glitter decade-long career and the count is still on.

"Shami should have gone directly for surgery and that should have been NCA's call. Just two months of rest and injections wouldn't have worked well and that's what has happened. He is an asset and the Indian team would need him in Australia," the BCCI official added.

Shami and his fiery face that wreak havoc stumps would surely be missed by the fans during the upcoming IPL.
