Glenn Maxwell Says Goodbye To ODIs After 201-Run Masterclass Legacy

Glenn Maxwell, one of Australia's most explosive and entertaining cricketers, has officially retired from one-day international (ODI) cricket with immediate effect. The 36-year-old all-rounder made the decision to end his 13-year ODI career in order to concentrate on T20 internationals, with the upcoming T20 World Cup in India firmly in his sights.

Maxwell played 149 ODIs for Australia, amassing 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81, including four centuries and 23 fifties. Known for his unorthodox strokeplay and game-changing ability, Maxwell also proved valuable with the ball, taking 77 wickets as a part-time off-spinner at an economy rate of 5.46. His final ODI appearance came during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where Australia bowed out in the semi-finals.

'Time for the Next Generation': Maxwell Reflects on Retirement

In a candid interview on the Final Word Podcast, Maxwell revealed that the physical toll of ODI cricket, particularly following a serious leg injury in 2022, played a significant role in his decision. "I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions," he said.

Maxwell recounted a key conversation with Chair of Selectors George Bailey, where he expressed doubts about lasting until the 2027 World Cup. "We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him 'I don't think I am going to make that... It's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'."

He added, "I always said I wasn't going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons."

Career of Highs, Including Heroics in 2023 World Cup

Maxwell made his ODI debut in August 2012 and quickly became a fan favorite for his flamboyant batting and fearless approach. One of the standout moments of his career came during the 2023 ODI World Cup, when he produced one of the greatest one-day innings of all time. Battling severe cramps, Maxwell single-handedly guided Australia from 91/7 to victory over Afghanistan with an unbeaten 201 off just 128 balls - a knock that has already become legendary.

He was part of two World Cup-winning squads, in 2015 and 2023, and retires as one of the most influential white-ball players of his generation.

Tributes Pour In for 'Dynamic' Match-Winner

Chairman of selectors George Bailey lauded Maxwell's contributions to Australian cricket, calling him "one of the one-day game's most dynamic players." Bailey added, "His level of natural talent and skill is remarkable. His energy in the field, under-rated ability with the ball and longevity has been superb. What else stands out is his passion for and commitment to playing for Australia."

Bailey also noted that Maxwell's experience and skill will continue to be crucial for Australia in T20 internationals. "Fortunately, he still has much to offer Australia in the T20 format. All things going well, he will be pivotal in the next 12 months as we build toward the World Cup early next year."

Maxwell Eyes T20 Glory

Maxwell reiterated that his focus now shifts entirely to T20 cricket, where he still sees himself as a key contributor for Australia. With the next ICC T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in India in 2026, Maxwell's attention is on helping Australia lift another trophy.

"I know how important planning is, and Australia is moving in a clear direction. This gives the team the best chance to build towards the next World Cup," he said.

As Glenn Maxwell steps away from the 50-over format, he leaves behind a legacy defined by flair, fight, and unforgettable performances-none more iconic than his double century in the 2023 World Cup. His next chapter, focused on T20 glory, is already underway.
