England Name Squad For First Test Against India At Headingley
England have officially announced their playing XI for the first Test against India, which begins on June 20 at Headingley. As expected, captain Ben Stokes has opted for a balanced side featuring three pacers and a sole spinner, with no major surprises in selection.
The seam attack will be led by Chris Woakes, alongside Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue. Shoaib Bashir has been named as the only spinner in the XI. The top-order will see Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett open the innings, followed by Ollie Pope and former captain Joe Root. The middle order comprises Harry Brook, skipper Stokes, and Jamie Smith, who takes over wicketkeeping duties.

Bethell's Exclusion Draws Attention
One of the key talking points from the announcement is the exclusion of young batting talent Jacob Bethell. The 21-year-old made an impressive Test debut against New Zealand last year, scoring three consecutive half-centuries and amassing 260 runs at an average of 52. Despite his early success, Bethell has not featured in England's plans since and was also left out of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe earlier this year.
Joining Bethell on the sidelines are seamers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, who have not been included in the playing XI for the Headingley Test.
Four Players Set for First Test Appearance Against India
This match will mark the first time Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Brydon Carse, and Josh Tongue face India in a Test. Brook was originally part of the squad for England's India tour last year but had to withdraw due to a family emergency.
In a blow to the bowling attack, Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the first Test after sustaining a right hamstring strain. His fitness will be monitored ahead of the remaining matches in the series.
