Chennai Super Kings Collapse In IPL 2025: 5 Talking Points That Triggered CSK's Downfall

The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League turned out to be a nightmare for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who finished at the bottom of the points table - their worst showing since the tournament expanded to 10 teams.

With just four wins in 14 games, the five-time champions crashed out of playoff contention well before the league stage ended, sparking concerns over their strategies, form, and leadership.

Even though towards the fag end of the season, CSK showed signs of improvement in the batting department through the likes of Dewald Brevis and Ayush Mhatre but it came at a time, where they are already out of play-offs contention.

Here's a look at the 5 talking points that sum up the 5-time champions' season woes.

1. Batting Blues and Powerplay Failures

One of CSK's biggest issues this season was their underwhelming batting display. In what was a rare sight at their Chepauk fortress, they were restricted to just 103/9 by Kolkata Knight Riders - their lowest-ever total at home.

Their powerplay performances were among the worst in the tournament, with an average of only 45 runs in the first six overs - well below the season average of 57. The top order struggled for rhythm, often leaving the middle order with too much to do.

2. Injuries and Captaincy Shuffle

Just few games into the season, the franchise were forced to make a leadership change by appointing MS Dhoni once again at the helm of affairs, replacing Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was replaced due to an elbow injury.

Though Dhoni remains a towering figure in the dressing room, questions were raised about his fitness and ability to handle the rigours of a full IPL season, especially at 43. He still showed promise with the bat in cameos but somehow he failed to carry his team like he used to do it before in his prime. He also pointed out the lack of a 'secured XI' in IPL 2025.

3. Auction Misfires

Despite entering the IPL 2025 auction with a strong purse of ₹55 crore, CSK failed to rope in any impactful T20 game-changers. Their top-order picks - including New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway - lacked the explosiveness needed in the powerplay, contributing to the team's early collapses in several matches. The middle order also failed to click consistently, with no clear finishers stepping up in crunch situations.

4. Subpar Fielding and Bowling

CSK, known historically for their sharp fielding, slipped in this department too. Dropped catches and poor ground fielding were regular features this season, compounding their bowling struggles.

With the ball, CSK lacked penetration and control. Their bowlers frequently leaked runs in the death overs and were unable to defend even competitive totals, putting additional pressure on the batting unit. The best bowler turned out to be Noor Ahmad, who is presently the leading wicket-taker of IPL 2025 as of now with 24 wickets.

5. Losing Momentum and NRR Trouble

The Super Kings suffered five consecutive defeats in the middle of the season - a first in their storied IPL history. That slide saw their Net Run Rate plunge to -1.302, the worst among all teams. With momentum lost and no signs of a turnaround, CSK were soon playing for pride rather than playoffs.

What's Next?

CSK's dismal performance in IPL 2025 is bound to trigger some hard conversations within the team management. With several veterans nearing the end of their careers and youngsters yet to make a significant impact, the franchise may need to consider a serious rebuild ahead of IPL 2026.

Whether this season marks the end of an era or the beginning of a transition remains to be seen - but one thing is clear: the CSK of old will need to evolve if they want to return to the top.
