Champions Trophy 2025: Australia Announces 15-Men Squad, Steve Smith To Lead, Mitchell Starc Dropped
Australia has announced their final 15-member squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, which includes several changes due to injuries and Marcus Stoinis' retirement. Steve Smith will continue to lead the Australian cricket team in the Champions Trophy, stepping in for Pat Cummins. The tournament is set to begin on February 19 in Karachi, Pakistan.
Mitchell Starc has withdrawn from the squad for personal reasons, adding his name to the list of absentees. Starc experienced discomfort during Australia's second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, particularly with his left ankle. "We understand and respect Mitch's decision," said George Bailey, chairman of selectors. "Mitch is deeply respected for his commitment to international cricket and the priority he places on performing for Australia."

Squad Adjustments
Spencer Johnson has been selected as Starc's replacement. Johnson has previously played a couple of ODIs and eight T20Is. Ben Dwarshuis joins him as another left-arm option in the squad. Jake Fraser-McGurk has been added as a backup opener due to Mitchell Marsh's absence.
Sean Abbott is included as the third seamer, marking a shift in Australia's pace attack strategy for this major tournament. This change signals a move away from relying solely on their traditional big three fast bowlers.
New Faces and Opportunities
Leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, who was part of the Test squad in Sri Lanka as a development player, is another addition to Australia's Champions Trophy team. Aaron Hardie will replace Marcus Stoinis following his retirement, while Glenn Maxwell will serve as the spin all-rounder.
The squad will have a few matches in Sri Lanka to prepare for the ICC event. These games are crucial for fine-tuning their strategies and ensuring they are ready for the challenges ahead.
