In a recent incident, a woman from Bengaluru, who had travelled to Chennai to watch the RCB vs CSK clash at the Chepauk Stadium, was swindled by an online scammer.

Cricket analyst Karthik Kannan brought the matter to light on his X account, posting a video in which the victim recounted her experience.

Alongside six others, she was left stranded outside the stadium after being duped with counterfeit tickets.

How was she tricked?

Sharing her ordeal, the woman explained that she had come across a man on Facebook who claimed to be a volunteer at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. He assured her that he could provide seven tickets for the match. Initially, he requested a 10% advance payment to reserve the tickets. However, after receiving the first instalment, he demanded full payment before releasing them. She refused, insisting that the full amount would only be paid once the tickets were delivered in person.

Despite her caution, the scammer continued to press for the full amount. When she reached the vicinity of the stadium around 1 pm, he failed to appear. She and six others were left ticketless despite paying ₹3,500.

The woman suspected foul play and even pleaded with the scammer not to deceive her, explaining that she had travelled all the way from Bengaluru just for the match. Her appeal, however, went unanswered, and she was left disheartened.

Kannan, while sharing the video, stressed the need for a robust, tech-driven system to prevent such frauds. "It is unfortunate that @VarnataS and six others were cheated. In today's digital age, there must be a more reliable system for secure ticket transfers," he wrote.

Other users also voiced their concerns about similar occurrences, particularly in Chennai. One individual commented that since the COVID-19 pandemic, such scams had become commonplace at Chepauk, with opportunists exploiting the fervour surrounding MS Dhoni.

He called on the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) to take stringent action. Another fan cautioned that purchasing tickets from unverified online sources is risky and advised sticking to reputable sellers.
