Amanjot Kaur’s Family Faced a Crisis During World Cup but Hid It to Let Her Chase Glory

Team India created history on Sunday night as Harmanpreet Kaur and her team lifted their maiden ICC Women's ODI World Cup title in Navi Mumbai.

Battling South Africa in the final, India posted a commanding 298/7 in 50 overs, led by Shafali Verma's stellar 87-run knock. The Proteas fought hard but eventually fell short, being dismissed for 246 runs.

He shared that Amanjot's grandmother, Bhagwanti, had suffered a heart attack during the tournament. Despite the gravity of the situation, the family decided not to inform Amanjot, fearing it might affect her focus and performance during the high-stakes championship.

"My mother Bhagwanti has been Amanjot's pillar of strength since the day she started playing cricket outside on the street and in the park near our Phase 5 residence in Mohali," Amanjot's father told The Indian Express.

"While I would be at my carpentry shop in Balongi, she would make sure to sit outside the home or at the park to oversee Amanjot playing with the boys as well as other girls," he added.

Family's Silent Strength During the Tournament

Speaking further about the emotional ordeal, Bhupinder Singh said the family spent several days in hospitals while Amanjot continued to represent the nation with full dedication.

"After she suffered a heart attack last month, we did not tell Amanjot about it, and the last few days have seen us spending time in hospitals for her treatment," he revealed.

"The World Cup win has surely come as a balm in these tense times for us," he added.

The family's decision reflects a touching balance between parental protection and belief in their daughter's dream. They allowed Amanjot to remain focused on her team while they handled the crisis quietly at home.

Amanjot's crucial catch during the final turned out to be a decisive turning point. Laura Wolvaardt, who was single-handedly keeping South Africa in the chase, looked unstoppable until Amanjot's sharp reflexes at the boundary changed the momentum.

Reflecting on the moment, the young all-rounder said, "We all knew how important the catch was. First time ever in my life, I'm glad that I got that second chance to take the catch."

"I don't have the words to express it. This means a lot; you can see the crowd cheering all around. We have created history. This is just the start - Indian cricket is going to be at the next level," she added.
