Coco Gauff Heads US Tennis Team in Paris Olympics After Tokyo Absence

Coco Gauff is set to spearhead the U.S. tennis contingent at the upcoming Paris Olympics, marking a significant return three years after her absence from the Tokyo Games due to a positive COVID-19 test. The 20-year-old, who currently holds the No. 2 spot in the world rankings, will be accompanied by Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins, and Emma Navarro in the women's singles category. The men's singles lineup will feature Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Chris Eubanks, and Marcos Giron. This announcement was made by the U.S. Tennis Association on Thursday.

Gauff Leads US in Paris Olympics

The Olympic tennis competition is scheduled to commence on July 27 at Roland Garros, famously known as the venue for the French Open. This year's American team is notable for including six athletes who will be making their Olympic debut. Among them, Gauff stands out not only as the reigning U.S. Open champion but also for her impressive performances in this year's Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the semifinals in both the Australian and French Opens.

Gauff's achievements on the clay courts of Roland Garros include reaching the finals in 2022, positioning her as a strong contender for a medal in both singles and doubles events at Paris. She has previously clinched five doubles titles partnering with Pegula. Moreover, Gauff secured her first major doubles championship at this month's French Open alongside Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic.

The announcement also highlighted Jessica Pegula's return to competitive tennis following a neck injury in April that sidelined her for the French Open. Pegula, who reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in 2022, is currently ranked No. 5 globally. Danielle Collins, announcing this season as her last on tour, has already bagged two titles this year and was the runner-up at the 2022 Australian Open.

On the men's side, Taylor Fritz leads as the highest-ranked American at No. 12 worldwide, closely followed by Tommy Paul. Both Paul and Giron had previously competed in the Tokyo Olympics. The U.S. team will also see 40-year-old Rajeev Ram participating in his third Olympics, teaming up with Austin Krajicek for doubles.

Ram, a seasoned player with four major doubles titles to his name, previously secured a mixed doubles silver medal alongside Venus Williams at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. The USTA has stated that it will reveal its mixed doubles team selection for Paris at a forthcoming date.

This diverse and talented lineup underscores the U.S.'s strong presence in international tennis and its aspirations for Olympic success in Paris. With a blend of experienced campaigners and promising newcomers, the team looks forward to making a significant impact on one of sports' grandest stages.
