Club World Cup Attendance Fluctuations: From Empty Seats to Hostile Atmospheres

As the Club World Cup kicked off in the United States, expectations were high for packed stadiums and enthusiastic crowds. However, the reality was different at Orlando's Inter&Co Stadium, where empty seats were more common than fans. "It's like playing football during lockdown," remarked one fan on social media. The attendance for the Mamelodi Sundowns vs. Ulsan HD game was notably low, with less than 1,000 spectators present.

Fluctuating Attendance at Club World Cup

Despite the sparse crowd in Orlando, other matches saw better attendance figures. The largest turnout was at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, where 80,619 fans watched Paris Saint-Germain face Atletico Madrid. This number is comparable to major European events, such as the English FA Cup final and the Champions League final. Yet, not all games drew such large crowds.

Fluctuating Attendance Across Venues

The opening week of the tournament experienced varying attendance numbers. While some matches attracted over 40,000 spectators, others struggled to fill seats. For instance, Chelsea's game against L.A. FC in Atlanta had only 22,000 attendees in a stadium that could hold 71,000. Even Lionel Messi's presence couldn't fill the venue for Inter Miami's match against Porto.

Ticket prices played a significant role in these fluctuations. Prices dropped significantly before the tournament began, with some tickets initially quoted at $349 in December. By Tuesday, FIFA reported selling 1.5 million tickets and having over 340,000 fans attend the first eight games.

Challenges and Comparisons

The Club World Cup faces challenges in attracting fans to this new format of global club competition. While FIFA President Gianni Infantino envisions it as a leading event in world football, attendance figures have been inconsistent. The average attendance for the tournament's first week was around 36,000 per match.

This figure contrasts with last season's Champions League average of just under 46,000 and the 2022 men's World Cup in Qatar, which averaged nearly 50,000 per game during its opening week. These comparisons highlight the difficulties of establishing a new tournament format.

Miami's Strong Turnout

Miami has been an exception with strong attendance figures. No game there drew fewer than 55,000 fans, peaking at nearly full capacity for Bayern Munich vs. Boca Juniors with 63,587 attendees. Bayern forward Harry Kane described the atmosphere as "hostile," reflecting Boca fans' passionate support.

Fans from Boca and Real Madrid queued for hours under intense heat to secure their spots at games. This enthusiasm came despite competing events like the Florida Panthers' participation in the Stanley Cup Final.

The Club World Cup's future remains uncertain as organisers gauge fan interest in another elite soccer event. Ticket demand from abroad has been highest from Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico according to FIFA data.

The tournament continues to unfold across various U.S. venues with hopes of drawing larger crowds as it progresses. The organisers aim to establish this competition as a staple in global football calendars while addressing challenges faced during its inaugural edition.
