Paris Olympics 2024: India To Priorities Mental Health

Many struggled with motivation and sleep, grappling with the uncertainty that defined those unprecedented times. Now, as the world prepares for another Olympic spectacle, Divya Jain and her senior colleague, psychiatrist Dr Samir Parikh, are poised to make history as part of India's Olympic medical team heading to Paris, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Their inclusion marks a significant shift in how mental health is prioritized in sports concept that Dr. Parikh, Chairperson of Fortis National Mental Health Program, acknowledges would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. "The conventional view of mental health support for athletes centred largely on performance optimization," reflects Dr. Parikh.

"Today, we understand that athletes' mental well-being is equally crucial." This evolution was propelled into the global spotlight during the Tokyo Olympics, particularly with the withdrawal of gymnastics superstar Simone Biles. Biles cited the 'twisties,' a disorienting condition, as she stepped back from competition, triggering a monumental conversation about mental health in sports.

The incident generated over two million social media interactions and surpassed even major news events in public interest. Divya Jain, Head of Psychological Services for Fortis National Mental Health Program, sheds light on the unique challenges athletes face. "There's a lingering stigma around seeking help for mental health issues," she explains.

Athletes often feel pressure to maintain an image of strength and resilience, fearing repercussions if they admit to emotional struggles, as reported by Hindustan Times. Ahead of the Paris Olympics, Dr Parikh emphasizes that their support for athletes extends beyond the competition itself.

"We'll be available before and after the Games," he affirms. Recognizing the enduring impact of such high-stakes events, their approach aims to enhance performance while safeguarding athletes' mental well-being from extraneous pressures. Their proactive measures include familiarizing athletes with their support team beforehand, and ensuring a trusted connection.

"Building rapport is crucial," says Divya Jain, highlighting their efforts to establish a supportive environment where athletes feel comfortable seeking assistance. At the Olympics, their interventions will encompass a range of strategies, from visualization techniques for mental rehearsal to mindfulness-based practices for emotional regulation.

These approaches are tailored to help athletes manage performance anxiety and maintain focus amidst the intense pressures of elite competition. Dr Parikh underscores the urgency of their role during live sporting events, where quick, effective solutions are essential, as per media reports.

"We see these moments as opportunities," he explains, emphasizing their readiness to provide immediate support when athletes need it most. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has also recognized the importance of mental health support, introducing initiatives such as a mindfulness app and a dedicated mental health helpline for athletes. These resources aim to empower athletes with tools to manage stress and enhance overall well-being throughout their Olympic journey.

As the Paris Olympics approach, the spotlight shines brightly on this transformative approach to athlete care-a convergence of physical prowess with proactive mental health support, as per media reports. It marks a pivotal moment in Olympic history, where the well-being of athletes is prioritized alongside their athletic achievements. With each initiative and intervention, the journey towards holistic athlete care continues, shaping a future where mental resilience is as valued as physical strength in the pursuit of Olympic glory.
