Arsenal Secures Sweden Striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon for £63 Million
Arsenal has secured the services of Sweden's Viktor Gyokeres, ending their prolonged search for a top-tier goalscorer. The forward joins from Sporting Lisbon for a reported £63 million ($85 million) and has committed to a five-year deal. Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, praised Gyokeres as an "exceptional talent" with the qualities needed for a leading centre-forward.

Gyokeres, 27, arrives at Arsenal after two stellar seasons in Portugal, where he became one of the world's most lethal finishers. His impressive tally of 82 goals in 85 matches, including 48 last season, helped Lisbon secure consecutive league titles. He outperformed renowned players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
Arsenal's Striker Search Ends
For Arsenal, acquiring a top striker has been crucial after finishing second in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons. Their inability to sign one during the January transfer window hindered their title challenge against Liverpool last season. Manager Mikel Arteta highlighted Gyokeres' consistency and goal contributions as key attributes.
"The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves," said Arteta. "He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels."
Gyokeres' Journey to Arsenal
Gyokeres returns to England after starting his career at Brighton as a youth player. He later made his mark at Coventry City in the second tier, scoring 22 goals to help them reach the playoff final in 2023. His 40 goals in 97 appearances for Coventry led to a £20.5 million ($25 million) move to Lisbon.
His remarkable form over the past two years sparked interest from major European clubs, including Manchester United. However, Arsenal secured his signature, marking a significant rise for Gyokeres, who began his career at Brommapojkarna in Sweden.
Proving Himself in the Premier League
Despite failing to break into Brighton's first team, Gyokeres' performances for Sweden and in the Champions League suggest he can succeed at Arsenal. He was the Nations League's top scorer with nine goals and netted six times in eight Champions League appearances for Lisbon last season.
Dalibor Savic, Gyokeres' former youth coach at Brommapojkarna, noted his determination: "He was a late developer because he was not the best striker or the best player in Brommapojkarna at age 16, 17, 18, 19," Savic told The Associated Press. "If he aims at something, he will achieve it."
Gyokeres will now aim to prove himself in the Premier League after limited opportunities at Brighton. His journey included loan spells at St Pauli in Germany and Swansea before his permanent move to Coventry.
