Argentina Rebounds with 3-1 Victory Over Iraq in Olympics; Spain Enters Quarterfinals
Argentina revived its Olympic men's football campaign with a 3-1 victory over Iraq on Saturday in Lyon. This win came after a surprising 2-1 defeat to Morocco in their Group B opener, which was disrupted by a pitch invasion and a two-hour delay caused by Moroccan fans.

Thiago Almada initiated the scoring for Argentina with a volley in the 14th minute at Stade de Lyon. Despite this early lead, Iraq equalised in first-half stoppage time through Aymen Hussein's header. Luciano Gondou restored Argentina's advantage with a far-post header in the 62nd minute, and Ignacio Fernandez secured the win with a long-range shot in the 85th minute.
Spain Advances to Quarterfinals
Spain secured their place in the quarterfinals with a 3-1 triumph over the Dominican Republic in Bordeaux. Goals from Fermín Lopez, Alex Baena, and Miguel Gutierrez ensured Spain's second win in Group C. Lopez, a promising talent from Barcelona, scored in the 24th minute, but Angel Montes de Oca equalised for the Dominican Republic in the 38th minute.
The Dominican Republic faced a setback when Edison Azcona was sent off before halftime. Baena then restored Spain's lead in the 55th minute, and Gutierrez sealed the victory with a goal in the 70th minute. Spain's men's team aims to continue their nation's recent success in football, following the women's World Cup win last year and the men's European Championship victory earlier this month.
Argentina's Group B Standings
With this win, Argentina is now level on points with Iraq and Morocco, each having three points. Morocco was set to play Ukraine later on Saturday. Argentina coach Javier Mascherano mentioned that Thiago Almada had his watch stolen when their training base was robbed earlier in the week.
Despite Iraq's efforts to cause another upset, Argentina managed to secure their first win of the tournament. Gondou's header and Fernandez's long-range effort were crucial in ensuring Argentina stayed competitive in Group B.
The match against Iraq saw Argentina bounce back from their initial setback against Morocco. The team's performance demonstrated resilience and determination to advance further in the competition.
The victory over Iraq has revitalised Argentina's hopes of progressing beyond the group stage. The team's ability to recover from an early setback and secure a crucial win highlights their potential as one of the tournament favourites.
Spain's consistent performance has been impressive, with key players like Lopez and Baena making significant contributions. Their success so far reflects their strong preparation and determination to add another trophy to Spain's recent football achievements.
The upcoming matches will be crucial for both Argentina and Spain as they aim to solidify their positions and advance further in the tournament. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if these teams can continue their winning streaks and achieve their Olympic dreams.
