Aman Sehrawat Earns Paris Olympics Spot for India, Deepak Punia Exits Early
Aman Sehrawat, the U23 world champion and senior Asian Championship title winner, has successfully secured a quota for the Paris Olympics in the men's freestyle 57kg category. This achievement came during the World Qualifiers held on Saturday, where Sehrawat's performance was nothing short of impressive. The 20-year-old, who trains at Chhatrasal Stadium, managed to score double digits in all his three bouts, clinching two of them by technical superiority. His qualification marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first Indian male wrestler to book a spot for the Paris Games in the men's section, ensuring India's representation.

Meanwhile, Deepak Punia faced a setback in his quest for Olympic qualification. Competing in the 86kg category, Punia was eliminated from the race after a first-round defeat by China's Zushen Lin with a close score of 4-6. Despite taking an early lead, Punia couldn't maintain his momentum against Lin's aggressive comeback.
On another front, Sujeet Kalkal showcased commendable skill in the men's 65kg category. Kalkal reached the semifinals but was defeated 1-6 by Mongolia's Tulga Tumur-Ochir, an Asian Games champion and Asian Championship silver medallist. Kalkal's journey to the semifinals included victories over Uzbekistan's Umidjon Jalolov and Korea's Junsik Yun. He now faces the challenge of winning two more bouts to secure his place in the Paris Olympics.
Aman Sehrawat's path to qualification was highlighted by his strategic prowess and physical strength. In his bouts against Georgi Valentinov Vangelov and Andrii Yatsenko, Sehrawat demonstrated superior technique, winning both matches with significant margins. His bout against North Korea's Chongsong Han was particularly notable for Sehrawat's defensive skills and counter-attacks, leading to a comfortable 12-2 victory.
Other Indian wrestlers faced mixed fortunes. Jaideep Ahlawat, competing in the 74kg weight class, showcased resilience by overcoming an initial deficit to win against Moldova's Vasile Diacon. Ahlawat continued his winning streak until he faced Slovakia's Taimuraz Salkazanov in the quarterfinals, where he lost 0-3. However, Ahlawat remains in contention for Olympic qualification through the repechage route if Salkazanov reaches the final.
The day also saw Deepak (97kg) and seasoned wrestler Sumit Malik (125kg) exiting the tournament after their first-round defeats. Their losses underscored the challenges faced by Indian wrestlers in securing Olympic quotas.
The performances of Indian wrestlers at the World Qualifiers have been a mix of triumphs and setbacks. Aman Sehrawat's qualification has been a highlight, bringing hope to India's wrestling contingent for the upcoming Paris Olympics. As these athletes continue their preparations and competitions, their focus remains on securing further qualifications and bringing glory to their country on the international stage.
