Aman Sehrawat Secures Bronze For India In 57kg Freestyle Wrestling At Paris Olympics 2024

Aman Sehrawat triumphed over Darian Toi Cruz of Puerto Rico in the men's 57kg wrestling category at the Paris Olympics, securing India's first wrestling medal at the Games. The 21-year-old wrestler clinched a bronze medal with a 13-5 victory, becoming India's seventh Olympic wrestling medallist.

India's previous wrestling medals include KD Jadhav (bronze in 1952), Sushil Kumar (bronze in 2008 and silver in 2012), Yogeshwar Dutt (bronze in 2012), Sakshi Malik (bronze in 2016), Bajrang Punia (bronze in 2020), and Ravi Dahiya (silver in 2020). Aman's win continues this proud tradition.

Sehrawat's Path to Victory

In earlier rounds, Aman showcased his dominance by defeating Vladimir Egorov of North Macedonia with a 10-0 score and then securing a technical superiority win against Albania's Zelimkhan Abakanov with a score of 12-0. His journey to the Olympics was marked by defeating Ravi Kumar Dahiya during national selection trials.

During the bronze medal match, Toi Cruz initially scored by pushing Aman out of bounds. However, Aman quickly retaliated by locking Cruz's leg and flipping him for two points. The match saw both wrestlers exchanging points rapidly, with Aman leading 4-3 at the break.

Aman's Background and Achievements

Aman Sehrawat hails from Jhajjar, Haryana, born on July 16, 2003. He faced significant personal challenges early on, losing both parents by age eleven. Despite these hardships, he found solace in wrestling under coach Lalit Kumar's guidance.

His dedication paid off when he won his first National Championship title in 2021. In subsequent years, he earned a bronze medal at the Asian Games in 2022 and gold at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, in 2023. He also secured gold at the Zagreb Open wrestling tournament in early 2024.

Impact of Aman's Victory

Aman's victory is not just a testament to his skill but also his resilience. He has often emphasized that wrestling is more than a sport; it's a way to honour his family's legacy. His journey has inspired many, reflecting both physical prowess and mental strength.

With this bronze medal, India has now won a wrestling medal at every Olympic Games since 2008. Aman's success continues to inspire young athletes across the nation to pursue their dreams despite any obstacles they may face.

"Many congratulations to Aman Sehrawat on winning India's fifth Bronze medal at #Paris2024," tweeted India at Paris 2024 Olympics (@sportwalkmedia). "A top performance from him to defeat Darian Toi Cruz and claim his first-ever Olympic medal."

Aman started the second half of his match strongly by locking Cruz for three points. With two minutes left, Cruz needed medical attention due to discomfort after Aman scored two more technical points. Despite trailing, Cruz struggled defensively as Aman capitalized on his injury to extend his lead further.

The final score stood at an impressive 13-5, marking Aman's commanding victory over Cruz. This win highlights not only his technical skills but also his strategic acumen on the mat.
